Certification levels / grades / classes

Drinking-water distribution/treatment grades include A–D and apprentices; wastewater biological grades 1–4, with category-specific grading or N/A for LA/SI/SS.

Renewal cycle

Annual renewal for wastewater and drinking-water operator certifications. Annual. Wastewater renewals require six continuing-education credits and the current renewal fee; drinking-water renewal is managed through the Certified Operator Portal/check-or-money-order process stated by DEQ.

Continuing-education requirements

Drinking water: six Board-approved professional-growth contact hours each year after initial certification. Wastewater: six continuing-education credits for annual renewal.

Reciprocity / out-of-state operators

Drinking water: Board review of a current active out-of-state certificate, restricted to applicants who reside, work, or have a firm job offer in NC. Wastewater: qualifying ABC/WPI registration plus equivalency to 15A NCAC 08G may allow certification without exam; otherwise the Commission may require the NC exam.
