Drinking-water applicants meet NYSDOH education/training/experience and exam requirements. Wastewater applicants complete grade-specific training, experience, and ABC/equivalent exam requirements; NYWEA processes applications.

Renewal cycle

Drinking water renews on a three-year cycle under 10 NYCRR 5-4.8; wastewater certificates are valid five years. Drinking water three years; wastewater five years, with a one-year post-expiration completion window before retraining/exam consequences apply.

Continuing-education requirements

Drinking water per three years: Grades IA/IIA 3.0 CEU including 0.5 laboratory; IB/IIB 3.0 CEU; C and D 1.5 CEU. Wastewater: Grades 1/1A 20 hours, 2/2A 40, 3/3A 60, 4/4A 80 per five-year renewal; designated cybersecurity hours apply for expirations on/after January 1, 2027.

Reciprocity / out-of-state operators

Wastewater has no formal state reciprocity agreement, but accepts qualifying ABC/equivalent examination results; out-of-state applicants must meet New York education, experience and training. Drinking-water Subpart 5-4 provides no general reciprocity shortcut: applicants, including out-of-state residents, must obtain New York certification and satisfy the validated-examination and qualification rules.
