Certification levels / grades / classes

Drinking water VSS/VND and Grades 1-4 treatment/distribution, with OIT and Full statuses. Wastewater includes graded licenses with WI, OT, Full, active, and inactive statuses.

Initial certification requirements

Applicants qualify for and pass the relevant Board examination; wastewater status progresses from WI/OT to Full when documented experience is accepted.

Renewal cycle

Two-year cycle; drinking-water and wastewater licenses expire December 31 of odd-numbered years.

Continuing-education requirements

Drinking water: VSS/VND 5 TCH; 1D/1T/2D/2T 10; 3D/3T 15; 4D/4T 20. Active wastewater operators: 20 TCH per cycle, with no more than 10 safety hours.

Reciprocity / out-of-state operators

Wastewater reciprocity covers an operator who passed another state's written exam and meets Massachusetts experience requirements, or qualifies through an accepted registry. Drinking-water reciprocity requires an accepted/Board-approved certification or exam plus Massachusetts education and experience requirements, including sequential-exam and prerequisite-course rules; the Board directs applicants to use the eLIPSE licensing process and contact drinkingwaterboard@mass.gov for reciprocity review.
