Certification levels / grades / classes
Drinking-water treatment and distribution use Grades 1-5. Wastewater uses Grades I-V and an Operator-in-Training pathway.
Initial certification requirements
Use the program for the credential sought. California publishes separate qualification and application materials for drinking-water and wastewater credentials.

The drinking-water and wastewater programs publish separate applications, schedules, and exam information.
Renewal cycle
Wastewater certificates are valid for three years. Drinking-water renewal requires the form, fee, and grade-based contact hours completed within the previous three years.
Continuing-education requirements
Drinking-water treatment and distribution: Grade 1 - 12 hours; Grade 2 - 16; Grade 3 - 24; Grades 4 and 5 - 36. Confirm wastewater CE directly with WWOCP.
Do not apply drinking-water grade-based hours to a wastewater certificate.

Drinking-water treatment/distribution and wastewater treatment are handled by separate programs.
